Both Ken and EWG have been the subject of profiles in the New York Times, the Chronicle of Philanthropy, the Chicago Tribune, and many other publications. Ken earned degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He lives in Washington, DC with his wife, Deb Callahan. Richard Wiles, Executive Director & Co-Founder, Environmental Working Group (EWG) , Washington DC, USA Richard co-founded EWG with Ken Cook, and now directs EWG's programs. He is a former senior staff officer at the National Academy of Sciences’ Board on Agriculture. Richard holds a BA from Colgate University and an MA from California State University at Sacramento. He is also an avid outdoorsman and skier. Dr. Devra Davis, PhD, MPH, Pennsylvania, USA Dr. Davis has recently published The Secret History of the War on Cancer, an extraordinary five-hundred page book on the battles won and mostly lost in regard to cancer over the last century. She was designated a National Book Award Finalist for her 2002 book When Smoke Ran Like Water. Dr. Davis heads up the world's first Center on Environmental Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. Honoured for her research and public policy work by various national and international groups, Davis is an Honorary Professor, London's School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and Expert Advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO). President Clinton appointed the Honourable Dr. Davis to the newly established Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, (1994-99) an independent executive branch agency that investigates, prevents, and mitigates chemical accidents. As the former Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Health in the Department of Health and Human Services, she has counselled leading officials in the U.S., United Nations, World Health Organization and World Bank. Davis was also Executive Director of the Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology at the U.S. National Research Council of the National Academy of Science, 1983-93. Dr. Davis holds a B.S. in physiological psychology and an M.A. in sociology from the University of Pittsburgh. She completed a Ph.D. in science studies at the University of Chicago, as a Danforth Foundation Fellow and an M.P.H. in epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins University, as a Senior National Cancer Institute Post-Doctoral Fellow. She has authored more than 170 publications, in books and journals ranging for Scientific American to the Journal of the American Medical Association and the Lancet. Dr. Russell L. Blaylock, M.D, Mississippi, USA Dr. Blaylock is a board certified neurosurgeon, author, and lecturer. He is certified as a Clinical Certified Nutritionist. Dr. Blaylock attended the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans and completed his internship and neurosurgical residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. For the past twenty-four years he has practiced neurosurgery. Along with the eminent Dr. Ludwig Kempe, Dr. Blaylock developed the transcollosal removal of intraventricular tumors and co-developed the ventriculo-lymphatic shunting method. Recently retired from his neurosurgical practice, he now devotes full time to nutritional studies and research-for one year he had a nutritional practice. The author of three books, Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills, Health and Nutrition Secrets That Can Save Your Life, and, Natural Strategies for The Cancer Patient. He has also written and illustrated three chapters in medical textbooks, a booklet on nutritional protection against biological terrorism, a booklet on multiple sclerosis, and over thirty scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Blaylock has been a guest on over fifty syndicated radio programs and appeared on the 700 Club and Nutritionally Living with Dr. Ward Bond. He lectures widely to both lay and professional medical audiences on a variety of nutritional subjects. Currently, he serves on the editorial staff of the Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, official journal of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, and the editorial advisory board of the journal Fluoride, the official journal of the International Society for Fluoride Research. He now serves as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Biology at Belhaven College and was appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board of the Life-Extension Foundation. Dr. Arpad Pusztai, MSc, PhD, FRSE, Budapest, Hungary World renown, Dr. Arpad Pusztai earned his first degree in Chemistry at the Eötvös Lóránd University, Natural Sciences Faculty, Budapest in 1953. In December 1956, Dr. Pusztai went to London with a Ford Foundation Scholarship where he received a PhD degree in biochemistry and physiology from the University of London. He did his postdoctoral studies at the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine in London, after which at the invitation of the Nobel-laureate Dr R.L.M. Synge, he joined his protein chemistry department at the Rowett Research Institute, Aberdeen, Scotland in 1963. He was a Visiting Associate Professor at the Department of Biological Chemistry of University of Illinois Medical Center between 1967 and 1968. Dr. Pusztai returned as senior scientist to the Rowett until his departure in 1990. In 1988, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. From 1990 to the end of 1998, Dr. Pusztai was engaged in research as a Senior Research Fellow of the Rowett at the request of the Institute. Since then Dr. Pusztai has been giving lectures on the dangers of genetic engineering of crop plants used for human/animal food/feed all over Britain, Europe and the World. From 2001, he has been collaborating in a Norwegian Research Council-funded GM food research programme at the Norwegian Institute of Gene Ecology, University of Tromso. Dr. Pusztai has published over 300 primary scientific papers and 9 scientific books. Currently, he is setting up a collaborative research programme in Debrecen to investigate the effects on the reproductive performance of rats fed on GM soybean diets (repeats of the "Ermakova" experiments). Dr. Doris Rapp, M.D, Arizona, USA Dr. Doris Rapp is board-certified in allergy, pediatrics and environmental medicine. She has written many books and articles for both the medical profession and public. She has traveled all over the world to speak to physicians and parents. Last year she spoke to over 250 doctors from all over Mexico about how to diagnose and treat patients who are sick from the air, food and water in their homes, schools and workplaces. She recently spoke to 1,500 at an alternative cancer treatment meeting in Los Angeles. She wrote a NY Time's best-selling book, Our Toxic World: A wake-up call. She videotaped every patient for 30 years in her office; she demonstrated that different concentrations of allergy extracts of dust, mold, pollen, food and chemicals could precipitate and then eliminate illnesses in almost any part of the body. She received 140,000 letters after she was on the Donahue show and has also been on Larry King and Oprah. She has received three humanitarian awards and numerous other awards for her teaching and contributions to the field of medicine. She is interested in finding fast, easy, safe, inexpensive and effective ways to help the masses and hopes to start a clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, to diagnose, treat, teach and do research. Dr. Rick Smith, Executive Director, Environmental Defence, Toronto, Canada Dr. Rick Smith is Executive Director of Environmental Defence, a national charity dedicated to protecting the environment and human health. Its innovative campaigns such as the Toxic Nation project - which involves testing people for measurable levels of pollutants in their blood - are aimed at creating a personal connection between Canadians and the pressing environmental challenges we face. Rick received his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Guelph. Prior to joining Environmental Defence, Rick served Chief of Staff to NDP Leader Jack Layton and as Executive Director of the Canadian and UK offices of the International Fund for Animal Welfare. He and his wife live in Toronto with their two young kids. They eat organic food whenever possible and have relegated their non-stick pans to basement storage. Dr. Kaayla T. Daniel, PhD, CCN, New Mexico, USA Dr. Daniel earned her PhD in Nutritional Sciences from the Union Institute and University, is board certified as a clinical nutritionist (CCN) by the International and American Association of Clinical Nutritionists and on the Board of Directors of the Weston A. Price Foundation and Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund. Dr. Laura Telford, Executive Director, Canadian Organic Growers, Ottawa, Canada Dr. Laura Telford is the Executive Director of Canadian Organic Growers (COG), Canada's largest national charitable organization dedicated to promoting organic agriculture. COG works to establish bioregional food systems that nourish the earth while reducing the environmental impact of food production; to reconnect consumers with the food system; and to empower farmers and rural communities to make the right ecological and economic choices. COG is currently working to increase the number of organic farmers and acres in Canada by providing training, support and opportunities to new and transitioning farmers. Executive ManagementMarie Germain, President & CEOMarie Germain was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec, and educated in both English and French. Later, her studies at McMaster University Social Sciences ended before completion due to the success and demands of her practice. Germain has been a marketing practitioner all of her adult life starting with the founding of an ad agency in the early eighties. This agency grew to two bi-coastal offices in Canada and became Canada's leading B2B agency. For a time there was a third office in Montreal and affiliates reaching to NYC and London, UK. For several years Germain honed skills to serve consumer markets, adding TV and radio commercials to its fare. At all times, Germain was Creative Director and earned several awards for her work on a variety of campaigns. After thirteen years and worn by the hours required by this business, she entered the loyalty marketing biz with a handful of investors, launching a points-based loyalty program. In 1997, Germain founded a knowledge corporation, BrainFood, supported by web properties and live events. At all times except during the loyalty years, Germain has continued to serve clients big and small, on everything from developing brand meaning, values and communications initiatives. Germain continues to speak occasionally on the human needs of consumers; however, almost all her time is now delegated to producing cinematic, live and internet productions for the betterment of our global society, resting on creative talent honed over decades and a keen understanding of the emotions that drive human beings. marie@287reasons.com Deborah Scheuneman, Executive Vice-President Deborah Scheuneman has lived in Europe, US and Canada and brings a wide range of talent to the 287 team. Educated at Queen's, Carleton and Laval, she has worn many hats over the years. From musician and professor, to writer and artist, from mother of four, to successful businesswoman, her background is varied and rich. Throughout the years, she has owned and/or operated many successful businesses, including an organics distribution. She is an innovative, creative person who truly loves and appreciates people. For the past 10+ years, she has been in the international corporate world, directing high-performing sales team and running offices for one of the largest BtoB event companies in the world. Most recently, in the same industry, she headed up the entire NA division of a UK-based company, with over 100 staff under her report. An avid environmentalist and committed vegetarian, she is well-known to be a proponent of healthy lifestyle. Her passion for the 287 cause provoked her decision to leave the corporate climate where she did so well, and follow her heart.
